2020-2021

Virtual Youth Conference

Hmong Student Union at the University of California, Davis, proudly presents “Trust the Journey.” This event will be virtual, and free of charge. The selected high school students will have the opportunity to participate in several workshops and connect with other inspiring individuals. This event will be open to only high school students, and anyone regardless of race/ ethnicity is welcome to apply.

This year’s theme is “Trust the Journey,” and we hope that it will serve as a toolbox for students to explore creating their own success. Like a pathway, it is not always direct and beautiful. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it shines, but it is those very experiences that will help the individual determine what success is to them. For this purpose, the selected individuals will be challenged with workshops that discuss their goals, inner-self, and their own success. We want the students to understand the importance of their success and to acknowledge that success comes in all sizes, and no matter how small it is, it does not mean that it is without value. Even though this conference highly focuses on and encourages the students to pursue higher education, it also notes that there are different pathways toward higher education. The individuals will be able to learn that there is no specific route for them to take in order to become successful. When you understand yourself, you will then realize that you are the one creating your own pathway.

To have the ability to recognize what you are capable of is a way of accepting yourself and who you are. The significance of accepting yourself is that it will aid you in understanding your own success. Always remember that success comes in all sizes. There is an expectation for us to succeed and become “something great.” But who is to define what “something great” is other than ourselves. We want you to know that as long as you continue to pursue higher education, and in any form or anywhere, just know that the step you took to move forward is an accomplishment.

The event will be 4 hours a day, and will last for 3 days. Participants will be grouped and assigned a mentor where they could reach out to for any question/s or concern/s. The individuals will engage in different workshops, learn from inspiring guest speakers, and attend motivational activities that will help them reflect on themselves. By the end of the event, we want the individuals to be able to answer the following questions:

  • What is the importance of recognizing one’s goals?
  • Why do I want to pursue higher education?
  • If so, how important it is to me?
  • What is success to me?
  • Why are all successes important?

“Trust the Journey” is a great and rare opportunity for high schoolers to learn about appreciating their path and their accomplishment(s). By taking the opportunity and applying, the individuals will receive extra guidance and support on the road to valuing who they are. Come apply, where your journey awaits!
